An old working-class quarter with character
Majorna, in the west of the city, was for centuries a harbour and working-class quarter, shaped by seafaring and shipyards. It has kept its own, unpolished character to this day: rows of typical Landshövdinge houses, small squares and a creative, down-to-earth atmosphere that many consider the "real" Gothenburg.
Vintage shops, cafés and water
Majorna is known as a bohemian, sustainability-minded quarter: vintage and secondhand shops, cosy cafés, collectives and organic grocers set the tone. From the neighbouring hill, Masthuggskyrkan looks out over its view, and towards the river, old harbour installations recall the quarter's maritime past.
Local rather than touristy
If you want to experience everyday Gothenburg away from the main sights, Majorna is the place. It isn't a classic sightseeing quarter but somewhere to wander, sit in a café and soak up local life - and it's easy to reach from the centre by tram.
